Each week a BA Woman contributes to our BA Women's Words—a bloglette posted on Friday mornings where we tackle gendered issues to advance the educational, personal, and professional development of women who seek to make a difference in the world.

My friend Elena inspired me to become my best self. In high school, we played sports together and commiserated on impossible homework. We supported each other’s goals and felt more confident in ourselves, because of each other. We almost went to the same college.
But we didn’t. And life happened. Time stretched on as did the pauses in our phone calls, which eventually faded to silence.
Friendship with Elena had been a BA Women friendship. Like B.A., Elena was fiercely loyal and had “a complex personality with an out-sized heart.”
And I missed her.
So, I picked up the phone. I waited between the dial tone and silence of four rings, and then heard her voice. It had been years, but we talked, and laughed, for two hours. We caught up on family and friends, current affairs, and what books we’re reading. And the best part? It’s looking like our kids are going to end up at the same college!
That brings us to my Friday morning message, born of a phone conversation I was scared to make: our connection as BA Women—our sisterhood—matters, and stands the test of time. BA Women are loyal, fierce advocates for what’s right, and for each other (even if it’s been a while). So, pick up the phone, and catch up with one today.
A BA Woman
A BA Woman is a member of our community who has a perspective to share, ideas to spread, and words worth hearing. She's tenacious, compassionate, and lifts as she climbs. She's totally BA. She could be anyone—her words are relatable because she gets us like no one else.more posts by A BA Woman →
