The BA Women’s Alliance kicked off our first summer PowHER Hour of this year’s program in June with our partners at Charles Schwab. During our one-hour virtual program, members of our 2020 EmpowHER cohort had the opportunity to connect with inspiring volunteer leaders who work at Charles Schwab, also known as "Schwabbies". Beyond finance, these individuals lead volunteer and community engagement efforts in communities across the country.
PowHER Hours, a key benefit of the EmpowHER Initiative, allow members of our cohorts to practice new skill sets in a professional environment, build relationships in their network, and learn from individuals further on their professional journey.
EmpowHER participants honed networking skills during small group sessions and learned the skill of leading from where you are from our Schwabbie counterparts.
The event was highlighted by a keynote from LaDeitra “DeDe” Lee, Senior Team Manager in Software Development and Engineering at Charles Schwab at the Austin Texas campus. LaDeitra has 28 years of experience mentoring, coaching, and leading young people. LaDeitra’s kindness and enthusiasm inspire others to do more for their communities and each other.
One EmpowHER participant shared that “the keynote speaker’s personal experience as a Black woman in a field where there weren’t many people that looked like her was very inspiring,” and another noted “it was great to connect with the Schwabbies—they seemed to have surprisingly similar interests with me and the other BA women in my group.”
Through their engagement and dedication, partner volunteers had the opportunity to support EmpowHER participants in their learning and professional journey, experience new virtual volunteering opportunities , and gain exposure to the BA Women’s Alliance and 2020 EmpowHER cohort.
