EmpowHER Alumnae Spotlight: Astrid Quinones

BA Women's Alliance

October 9, 2018

Astrid Quiñones was a 2017 Graduate Public Service Scholar, who interned at the Legal Aid Society, focusing on domestic violence and family law.

Where are you from?
I consider myself a citizen of the world.

Where did you go to school? What did you study?
I recently graduated from Syracuse University College of Law and Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. I studied law, of course, and public administration.

What was the best part of your internship?
The best part of my internship was hearing a client, after working with them to get a civil protection order, say, “thank you.” While a protection order does not necessarily eliminate domestic violence, it does provide a survivor some peace of mind and gives her the control and power she deserves and needs to thrive.

What lessons did you learn that you would like to pass on to future interns?
Stay connected to the people you meet! You never know what you will learn by building those relationships.

What are you doing now?
I recently sat for the bar exam and will be a judicial clerk for a family law judge. A clerkship will lay the foundation for my public service career. My education and my experience as a judicial clerk will give me the capacity to be a zealous attorney for marginalized communities, practicing public interest law.

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?
In the future, I also hope to be a policymaker in order to increase access to justice, whether through a non-profit organization or in politics.

What is your favorite book and what are you reading now?
I am currently reading Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado. It’s a collection of short stories that have me on my toes. I would recommend reading the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Tell us a fun fact!
I’ve lived in 11 states.
