EmpowHER Alumnae Spotlight: Felicia Reyes

BA Women's Alliance

April 4, 2018

Felicia Reyes was an Undergraduate Public Service Scholar in 2016, when she interned with the Children's Defense Fund.

Where are you from?
Los Angeles, California

Where did you go to school? What did you study?
I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Southern California where I studied American studies & ethnicity.

What was the best part of your internship?
I loved my internship in D.C. I saw powerful women making an impact on our nation’s children. I think my favorite parts, besides being around primarily strong women of color, was going to different events where people were trying to find solutions to national problems. The energy at those events was inspiring and made me feel like anything was possible.

What lessons did you learn that you would like to pass on to future interns?
I learned that networking is so important and you can start adding the people you work for in your network right from the start. They want to help. Having informational coffees or sit-downs with people who are lawyers and advocates helped clarify what I want to do!

What are you doing now?
I am a youth coordinator for a nonprofit called Just in Time for Foster Youth. One of the highlights of my jobs is getting to facilitate a career-based mentoring program for young women who have exited the foster care system.

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?
I am not entirely sure. I want to eventually move from direct-service work into work that makes an impact on a community level.

What is your favorite book and what are you reading now?
I am currently reading Children of Blood and Bone. It’s about a young girl who is trying to bring magic back to her people in the fantasy land of Orisha. The author is being called the next J.K. Rowling and so far the it is really good!

Tell us a fun fact!
I spoke alongside Usher at the Brilliant Minds Conference in Sweden last summer. The experience was surreal!
